Who Benefits from Wine & Roses?
Wine & Roses is being held on Sunday June 13, 2010, and has become one of Southern California's most popular wine tastings unmatched in attendance, winery participation and ambiance. For over 20 years this Charity Wine Tasting has generated funds for its charitable beneficiaries.
Camp Oliver - Descanso, CA Camp Oliver (www.campoliver.com), a nonprofit, year-round camp serves as a valuable San Diego resource. In 1950 the Lawrence Oliver family donated 15 acres of wooded land to Descanso to the Sisters of Social Service and the concept of a children's residential summer camp was born. The camp has since developed into a 20-acre facility, which includes a large main lodge, campers' cabins, a director's cabin, swimming pool, infirmary and storage and laundry facilities. Funds raised by Wine & Roses are used to maintain and upgrade the existing facilities and to provide "campership" assistance to children who otherwise not have the financial resources to attend camp. Children are never refused because of lack of funds.
Camp Oliver's Wish List
The Social Service Auxiliary, founded in San Diego in 1941 to assist the Sisters of Social Service with their work in San Diego County, is the sponsoring organization for Wine & Roses. Auxiliary members are diverse talented women who donate their time and talent to raise funds for the Sisters' projects, which include Camp Oliver.
The Social Services Auxiliary also sponsors the San Diego International Wine Competition, (www.sdiwc.com), recognized as one of the premier wine competitions in the nation. Over 1,800 wines are entered in the competition for professional assessment by a panel of local and national judges. Wineries receiving medals agree upon entering the Competition to donate a case of their award winning wine to Wine & Roses to be sold by the case to the guests in attendance. At the event our guests are offered tastings of many of these wines and food from fine San Diego restaurants.
For over 20 years, Wine & Roses Charity Wine Tasting has generated funds for Camp Oliver and other charities of the Sisters of Social Service.
